The first morning in Alaska! The sunrise in Alaska was around 11 AM on that day, so it was almost noon when it was getting light. We ate breakfast when it was still dark, and after a while, we stood by the hotel until Mrs. Pat and Mr. Ed picked us up: They were supposed to give us the experiences of Alaska’s life and help us during our six-day stay.

The view from the hotel.

Mr. Ed picked us up at 11 AM, and then he stopped by the airport in order to pick up a traveler who was from Japan. We and the Japanese traveler, Atsushi, were off to Mrs. Pat’s cabin.

It was the first time to see Alaska under the sun. Almost all sights which I could see through the car window were white snowscape. Although the inside of the car was warm, the outside was so cold that the car windows were frozen unless the wind from the heater blew directly toward the windows. It was -3℉ at that time.
It was getting snowy when we almost got to the cabin. We arrived there after about an hour by car.

By the way, now the sunrise is 11 AM, and moreover, the sunset is 3 PM in Alaska!
“The daytime is short” That’s why we did everything in a hurry: Carrying our luggage to the cabin where we were supposed to stay, eating light lunch, putting on a down jacket, pants, gloves, hat and boots for the coldness. For what? A dog sled! It was the most intriguing activity I was looking forward to.

Today’s lunch: Mrs. Pat’s homemade clam chowder and seafood salad.

We put on warm clothes like this.

Mrs. Pat is a musher who lives deep in the mountains of Alaska with Mr. Ed and twenty-one amazing dogs.
The twenty-one dogs were barking loudly when we were getting close to them from far away, but when we got close to each dog, a lot of them backed away and looked scared. However, they looked a little happy if we approached slowly and pet them.

There were a few dogs which were eager to play with us like this dog, ENYA.

We helped to prepare the dog sled by playing with the dogs,

and then, went to the trail!

f:id:tmikky:20160120145231j:plain Let's go!

First of all, Mrs. Pat drove the dog sled, and we just rode on it by turns.

The dogs for the sled which kept barking suddenly became quiet when they started running. Except Mrs. Pat’s voice for direction to the dogs, what I heard during the riding were the sounds of sled slipping and dogs running. Besides the coldness, I was sometimes likely to fall down so I was a little nervous. However, I was getting more comfortable with the motion and started to think about how cute the dogs were. Especially, their butts!

The photo when the sled which my husband rode on came back.

Finally, each we made a round of the trail riding separately without falling, and then, Mrs. Pat told us next was our turn to drive the dog sleds! It was surprising, but we took on the challenge! Mrs. Pad said she would ride on the sled. It made me relieved a little.

Have fun!

First, my husband. He learned how to put on the brake, and GO! After a while, he came back without any trouble.

f:id:tmikky:20160120152426j:plain

Next, Atsushi. He seemed to leave safely, but the dogs ran a wrong trail so he came back earlier than we expected. He tried again but came back early again. He succeeded on his third try.

At last, my turn! Although I tried to drive with enthusiasm, I made the same mistake as Atsushi.

The six dogs led the sled, and the heads, two of them, were the leaders. When we came near the junction of three-way, which they repeated the mistakes, the leaders chose the right way which was wrong in my first try, and in my second try, the leaders chose the left one which was correct, but maybe they didn’t look confident, so that the two dogs behind the leaders dashed to the right way with leading their leaders! Mrs. Pat was angry about that. She got off the sled and got mad at the two dogs who ignored the leaders.

On my third try, they chose the correct way.

Although I was wearing gloves, I was getting numbness in my hands because I drove many times. However, the sight from driving was different from when I was riding, and it was so wonderful that I totally forgot the numbness and the coldness.

f:id:tmikky:20160120152639j:plain

I thought we came back to the starting point directly, but Mrs. Pat suddenly told me something like say “zii” when she signaled to me because we were off to the small pond. I said “zii” when Mrs. Pat signaled, and then, the dogs went right which was usually supposed to go left! I said “zii” again when Mrs. Pat signaled, the dogs went right again, and after a while, we got to the open snow field! I was touched and couldn’t take my eyes off it. In addition, I discovered my husband, Atsushi, and Mr. Ed so I waved my hands. Because of this unexpected my action, the sled leaned toward the right. Even though Mrs. Pat advised me to put my weight on my left foot, it was too late to lift my weight toward left, so finally….

f:id:tmikky:20160120151927j:plain

We fell down!!

f:id:tmikky:20160120152201j:plain

However, the dogs still tried to run. This situation made Mrs. Pat so nervous. I did what I could do quickly based on her direction, and after just a minute, Mr. Ed came and helped us. I walked close to the excited leaders and pet them to calm down by her directions until the sled was ready to go. I drove and Mrs. Pat rode on the sled again, we came back to the starting point.

These two dogs were the leaders!

It was 3:30 PM when we finished the dog sled. They usually give them water after dog sleds, but the dog's dinner time, 4:30 PM, was coming so we didn’t give water at that time.

We helped to feed the dogs at 4:30 PM. The meal for the dogs was dog food and homemade flavor water, which ingredients were a small amount of dog food, a can of cat food, and hot water. It was dark outside so we fed the dogs by turning our headlights on. The feeding style was different for each dog: the amount of dog food, whether mixing the dog food and flavor water or not, and so on. Off course, Mrs. Pat knew everything about that. I admired her so much.

We learned how to feed them, and finished.

Next was our, human's, turn. We were having dinner, also!
